This technical note presents a detailed analysis of the interdependence between rail transport and other economic sectors in Mexico using the Input-Output Matrix (IOM). The analysis applies the input-output model to evaluate the economic relationships between sectors based on Mexico's System of National Accounts. The results highlight that rail transport is a crucial mode, albeit secondary compared to freight transportation, accounting for 4% of the total intermediate demand for means of transportation. The analysis reveals that sectors such as transport equipment manufacturing, the food industry and the chemical industry are the main users of rail transport. In addition, there is a high degree of complementarity between rail transport and other modes of transport, especially freight transport. The paper highlights the importance of rail transport in the supply chain and its impact on business risk planning and mitigation. This study provides a valuable tool for strategic and economic decision making, offering a comprehensive view of how the different modes of transportation interact and complement each other within the Mexican economy. The findings provide essential insights for improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the transportation sector, as well as for promoting public policies aimed at sustainable economic development.
